I was just talking to my cousin in Turin via message. We were talking about my traveling plan later in the next month and suddenly we got into this conversation about school and job. He is working now for a consultancy that works together with Fiat and he was saying how busy it is right now because they are working on a big project. Even on most weekend he has to go to work.

And you know what, he is saying that in a spirited tone!

Makes me think. Do I want what I want badly enough? Am I casting them into gold?  

Okay. I better go and work at uni.

Swinburne / PJ / Workshop

I'm not sure if I miss Swinburne, but I miss the workshop! However to be honest, the workshop here at HAWK is a thousand times greater. I could run from one workshop to another to get tools, get things done here and there, the technology is pretty cool, manual work is highly possible. There is a place for me to do things. Professors are damn nice too! You can actually sit down with them and talk about your projects and they will spend time with you to teach you things in detail. I will miss the privileges for sure.

Oh and happy birthday Jo! I'll see you soon!

At times like this I wish that I've worked just a bit harder. Especially at times when you've been on a half year holiday and you're just a step away from coming back to your must-lived life. 

I am trying to catch my dream, which looks like it is just around the corner but seems so far away. Good or not good enough, we will see soon.

The thing is if I you never tried, you would not ever know.

And also things won't happen overnight. So if you were just thinking to do what you want to do three seconds ago, you might get to do it in the next year or so. Saying that to myself.

If I'm in Indo, I would be at home right now. We will have a Christmas party with friends, a thing that we've been doing since junior high school, which waaas six or seven years ago. We've known each other for some time now after I thought about it.  

 Last year the party was at my house and the moms came too. It's very rare to have people in Jakarta at the same time, since everyone seems to be everywhere. I wish I am home at this time of the year. I kind of miss everyone. And people in Melbourne too, of course. Much and many.

The nicest Christmas party I must say! Every department in the design school is having their own Christmas party this week just before holiday starts. This one is the metal and product design department. It is dirty, it is dark, it is warm, the silversmith workshop is the best place to do a party. 

Everyone was there with good food, good cheese, good drinks, good dessert, good Christmas sweets. The nice thing about HAWK is it is such a small university that everyone knows each other. Everyone at the party was pretty much everyone you see at Uni. It's a one tiny family! 

This is where people would usually burn metal. But it was wurst, grilling last night.

And of course Glühwein. What is Christmas in Germany without hot wine.

Oh and it just snowed when I was writing this!

It is December now. The sun is not as bright as it used to be. Days are short. Wind is strong. I have been horsing around. Not sure yet what will I get by the end. But the hell I enjoy my times here. I am taking my time. Doing things slower. Talking to people. Basically doing things that I would not ever done if I don't have a semester of holiday.

Some things you gain, some things you lose, I guess.

But I like what I'm gaining so far. But duh! Time is ticking. I better use my time wisely. Nothing is in my head now so nothing holds myself back really.

On our way from Darmstadt to Stuttgart we decided to stop by in Heidelberg. One of the prettiest cities in Germany I must say. We got there just after the dawn, the sky was colored rose pink with just an appropriate amount of mist. The air is cool and the breeze flows through our hair. 

We took the rail up to the castle, looking at the city from a better view. The Neckar river flows through the city, separating the university from the other part of the city.

Traveling is like dreaming,

you see things you've

never imagined before.

The thing that I like about traveling is I am finding characteristics of each cities that I went to. I wish I could spend more time and live a life here and in other cities too. There is simply too many things to be learned and experienced by living somewhere new. Somewhere, where you don't speak the language.

We spent our special Sunday, when the shops are open (they usually are not), in Düsseldorf. A big city, somehow feels very structured and rigid. If you are here, you should go to the Kunst im Tunnel, a contemporary underground gallery. It is nice to see people are out enjoying the sun, lying on the grass along the Rhine. 

Wonderland

I went for Alice im Wunderland's ballet last night in Hannover. Somehow it reminds me of my love of shows, for having not seen it in some time. Not just the show, I love looking at the artsy people. I wish I can see shows every weekend. Who needs TV.

I do need constant reminder of why I create, why I am making things, and why I am doing what I love doing. 

 Especially Alice, I love how the story can be so literal and straightforward just like a kid would be but then it can also be interpreted in so many ways. It is good to see how this ballet is so different from Tim Burton's Alice, which feels a bit dark. Oh I love the costume and I love how they play with basic effects like shadow and projection to create visual illusion.

And the music, the pleasant of listening to carefully crafted harmonics that make you forget that you are in a live show. I kind of miss my marching band days, although it was a bit rugged back then, but it is simply because it is a totally different kind of production. Yet all of them have the same essence, I think.

Hm, must be fun to be involved in a production. I did some before, good ones, crappy ones, but they all feel satisfying in their own way. I like the notion of how people put so much work into something and they gain the joy after.  Maybe that is what I like doing?

Going to Vitra felt like a dream to me. Why? Hm, just because I've seen it so much in magazines, I want it badly enough that we decided to go to the very southern part of Germany just to go here. I guess I possess a bit of industrial-design self in me somehow. Who would've thought.  

Located in Weil am Rhein (am Rhein simply means it is along the Rhein), the city itself is called 'The City of Chairs'. When we arrived in the city, huge chairs are everywhere, monster size. If you walked to the river then you will see France on the other side. We would love to to that, but we were drawn so much into the greatness of the factory that we spent the whole day there.

We did the architectural guided tour. Tell you what, the area is simply amazing. There is the first Zaha Hadid's building, Frank Gehry's, Tadao Ando's, SANAA's, and the VitraHaus by Herzog & de Meuron. Too much goodness in one site, really. The factory itself is only used for assembling parts and finishing the products. 

Strangely enough, I met two Indos there while we were reading books in one of the houses at VitraHaus. 

It feels like IKEA, a really posh IKEA though. Gee, imagine working here. You are actually in this beautifully designed area, meeting your clients at one of the conference rooms designed by Tadao Ando (they are actually having meetings there when we were in the building), having lunch at the cafe and sitting on Erwan Bouroullec's Vegetal chair while deciding which design should go into production. Goosebumps. 

Eca & Frankfurt

I don't think we got much of the goodness of Frankfurt. We went there on a Monday and we didn't realize that the museums are closed on Mondays. Sigh. The city itself, hm, partly very modern, partly pretty. It was my first city in Germany. The Hauptbahnhof is huge though, and people dress really well down in the south.

Mainz is pretty. It's a very quiet city. Seems like everyone's just whispering. But it's nice.

October Fest

Have I told you that October Fest is simply ~~crazy~~ fun? This has got to be the biggest festival I've been to. As soon as we arrived in München, we saw everyone was dressed in the traditional Bavarian outfit and everyone was going to the same direction. We needed no maps, we followed people.

So shall we start with the food?

The types of food you might get at the October Fest:

- Weißwurst > Literally translated as white sausage

- Schweinebraten > Sliced roast pork shoulder (sometimes butt) with gravy

- Schweinshaxe > Grilled pork joint

- Rollbraten > Rolled pigs' belly

- Schnitzel 

Sounds rather meaty, eh? Besides that, you can also get lighter food, like 1/2 meter Bratwurst, Halb Hähnchen (a 1/2 chicken roast), Leberkäse, or pork chop with sauteed onion in bun. Madness. If you feel like snacking, there's the lovely roasted almond in some sort of sweet mixture of sugar and cinnamon.  

We love the rides, especially the five loops roller coaster.

 The chance of getting in to the tents was paper thin. Even to get in to some tents, you got to reserve days or weeks before. Somehow we managed to squeeze in, we found our way through to the tent and freed ourselves from the the tall Germans' blockage. We ordered our beer and the largest Brezel we've ever seen. No one was basically making any sense by this point. Everyone was on the table, singing, dancing, toasting. Fun.  

One thing I'm really amazed of is how clean the toilet was. No kidding, it was spotless clean. Keep in mind that everyone was pretty much drunk there, but the toilet was super clean! You can witness civilization through a cubicle of toilet I guess. Good on you, Germans.

This is Chris.

And this is Konstanz. We are pretty much in the very southern part of Germany now. I love Konstanz simply because it's so pretty. The old part of the town is gorgeous, the people are nice. The shops are good, the cafes are pretty. Chris took us around the city then we stopped for a traditional pasta lunch. We sat on the balcony of Chris' favorite restaurant. Again, I can't remember the name of the food, it's too complicated, but I remember the taste, it was good. It's just like a mac and cheese but a thousand times tastier. Or was it just because we've been eating bread for days? Nah, I'm pretty sure it was really good. We walked a bit and we found the Bodensee. After enjoying the sun for a while there, we went back to the city to get ice cream. We were pretty exhausted already by this time because we've been on so many trains and we did so much walking in the last couple of days, so we were slowing down our pace and just enjoying the time.

This is a city you have to come to if you ever come to Germany. Last week we went there to see the shops. The shops are awesomely good. Can't believe they can put so much goodness in a city.

München

München this is. So many people here compared to the other cities where we went to before, maybe it's because the October Fest is on. Yet the city is very memorable to Buzzi and I because we stayed for two nights in a tent! And it was super cold. And staying in a tent in München during October Fest is more expensive than staying in a proper hostel in Stuttgart. Crazy. We came there at 11PM and the tent area was really quiet (the beer tent was mad though). At 2 in the morning it was really noisy because all the drunk guys are starting to come back to their tents. Haha.

During the day, we went to Viktualien Markt to get a Bavarian lunch. I got myself a Leberkäse (which to me is a posh Spam, but it's really good) and Buzzi got a Weißwurst with sauerkraut and a brezel. We went around the city and found this really nice shop called Manufactum, the best shop in the whole universe. The website is not that nice, but the shop, need not to say more. I got a golden bell for my bike there. Sweet.

Bodensee

This is Bodensee in Konstanz. On your left is Austria, in front of you is The Alps, from the point of view of Germany. The most beautiful view I've seen in the trip, I think. I mean, look at the water! I've never seen a lake that clear! The lake is so close to the city, you barely have to walk, it's there. Anyway. We were just sitting by the lake under the warm sun, waiting for our next train.

Our first city was Köln. We thought that it is a small city but it is a thousand times more complicated than Hildesheim. Our highlights of the city:

   - Dom

   - Schokoladen Museum

   - The Love Bridge (Not too sure about the name)

   - Ludwig Museum

       > The largest contemporary museum I've ever been in! The  collection is huge, and contemporary. I like.

Dita guided us through the city. We found a Muji in the city! We had a nice Pad Thai dinner in Rudolfplatz. Our plan was to catch the last train from Köln to Düren. But oh boy, we were fooled by the punctual Germans. We got to the train's door 30 seconds before the train departed, it wouldn't open, causing us to stay there for another hour. An old guy, who turned out to be a farmer, offered us a bag of tomatoes, perhaps because of the despair on our face. We were sleeping hopelessly in our first night at Düren's Hauptbahnhof to catch the first night bus to Jülich. Too much excitement in the first day was not good. It ended up with a very good sleep. Questioning ourselves, do we want to continue our journey?

We went to the woods, yayay! It is Harzburg, a mountain range in the Northern Germany. We walked quite a bit, took the cable car, walked again for another hours. Stopped for a cold drink straight from the spring. Walked again, up up. Then we got to this spot where we could see this lovely scenery. Had our packed lunch, a sandwich and an apple for me, while sitting on the rocks and enjoying the view. And oh the breeze. Nothing beats the mountain breeze.  

 We saw the lynxes. Then we walked downhill to the city and stopped for an ice cream. What a nice day in the woods.

A Sunday Afternoon in Hannover

I must admit that Hannover is a very cool city. But strangely enough, it's not the young who liven up the city. I went there on the weekend when there is a festival in the city (well there seems to be a festival here every time I check). There was this really cool band called Jazzkantine performing in front of the Hauptbahnhof. Everyone was basically on the street that afternoon. People were dancing and drinking, couples were kissing (not the young ones, I tell you). Basically, everyone here is enjoying their life!
So. More or less, the festival is to introduce the city. There were some free tours, food stalls on the main streets, and the most awesome thing is they let people in to the galleries and museums for free. Hannover is the place where contemporary works are highly appreciated, or should I say Europe. Lovely. I went to one of the contemporary galleries, named Kustverein Hannover.
I haven't explored the city that much too, but knowing that I can travel here for free using my student card, I can come here every weekend, yay.

The Last Melbourne Job

Just in time, a job that I finished before I left Melbourne, made for a friend of mine. When I was making this, people kept telling me that it looks like a piece of Ikea. Sigh, I didn't mean that, perhaps the nord vibe was getting to me too soon. By the way, this is a bookshelf. The body was built using traditional domino joinery and stained black for the grain to subtly appear. Yet the two legs in front were modernly machined in four hours, then finished with a rub of Danish oil.

28 Hours

I am a day older on my way to where I am right now. This was the longest trip I've ever took: 14 hours Melbourne - Doha, stopped for 2 hours in Doha, 7 hours Doha - Frankfurt, waited 2 hours at Frankfurt Central Station, 3 hours from Frankfurt to Hildesheim, 10 minutes from the station to home, 2 planes, 1 train, 1 car, 2 new contacts on my phone. And it was a solo trip.
It gave me time to think though. All I had in my mind on my way from Melbourne to Doha was what the hell am I doing here! And same thing repeated on my flight to Frankfurt, what on earth am I doing? And when I was on the train, am I doing the right thing? Haha. This morning in my room, I thought again that I could have chosen an English-speaking country, why did I pick this deserted city in the first place? Can you see my doubts? I thought I was mad. But if madness can get me somewhere, I will take the chance.
Well, nothing ventured nothing learned. We all shall see what is going to happen with me in this other part of the world. Should be interesting, if not intimidating.

Upacara bendera tahun ini agak berbeda. Pasukan pengibar bendera lebih spesial, ini angkatan pertama Paskibra Indonesia di Melbourne. Lebih spesialnya lagi kami mengibarkan Merah Putih di Federation Square, sesuatu yang belum pernah dilakukan sebelumnya. Teman-teman Paskibra tahun ini juga sangat spesial. Semuanya spesial di bulan Agustus ini.

Next week shall be interesting. I will be preparing for a new found journey - an educational one / a travel trip. I have a few projects coming up, just bought sheets of plywood, so I shall spend my days at the workshop, measuring twice and cutting them once. Some things waiting to be done for the publications. Some things for myself. Packing my bags as I will fly back soon. Better be organised. Have a nice weekend though, my plan is to sit back and relax, preparing myself for the week to come. Tata!
